Teaser Tuesday July 29

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

You meet my mother at the door and try to prevent her coming in. Your face is pink with heat, and there are bloodstains on your shirt.

She pushes at you, but you're a wall. She pummels you, but you don't flinch.

Life of a Blogger: Quirks

Life of a Blogger is a weekly feature hosted by Novel Heartbeat.
Every week we talk about a non-bookish topic, so that we get to know each other on a more personal level.

This weeks topic: Quirks

Where do I even start? I openly admit that I am an odd one.

  • I don't like my food to touch on my plate, if it's not meant to be mixed together it shouldn't be touching.

  • Along those same lines I eat things in an order, which I never thought was weird until my aunt pointed it out one time when we were out one time now she laughs at me.

  • I'm incredibly grossed out by feet. If you touch me with your feet I'll probably freak out....baby feet are okay though.

  • I only eat eggs if they are hardboiled otherwise I cant stand them.

  • I haven't owned a winter coat since I was 18 and I live in Wisconsin

  • I have a giant sectional in my living room but I only ever sit in one spot on it and no one else can sit there.

There's probably so much more, but you don't really want to know how strange I am.

What's Next July 24

What's Next is a meme hosted by IceyBooks!
Here's how it works :
-Every Thursday select three-five books (not too many, not too little!) that you want to read but can't decide which one to read first.
-Post the cover, and if you want, the synopsis or even a random line from the book, for each of your selections.

-At the end of your post, ask readers to vote on which one you should read next!

{Review} The Secret Year - Jennifer R. Hubbard

Take Romeo and Juliet. Add The Outsiders. Mix thoroughly. Colt and Julia were secretly together for an entire year, and no one, not even Julia's boyfriend, knew. They had nothing in common, with Julia in her country club world on Black Mountain and Colt from down on the flats, but it never mattered. Until Julia dies in a car accident, and Colt learns the price of secrecy. He can't mourn Julia openly, and he's tormented that he might have played a part in her death. When Julia's journal ends up in his hands, Colt relives their year together at the same time that he's desperately trying to forget her. But how do you get over someone who was never yours in the first place?

I've decided to sign up for the 2nd annual Beat the Heat Readathon hosted by Jessi @ Novel Heartbeat and Reanna @ Phantasmic Reads.

I think I'm going to try and read 10 books for this readathon. I don't know what I'm going to read yet, but  I'll post it here as soon as I decide.

Ze Rules!
  • The Beat the Heat Readathon runs from August 11th to September 1st. What does this readathon entail, you ask? Well, read as much or as little as you want – the main point is to READ! You set your own goal, and for three weeks you read as many books as you can/want to reach your goal!
  • There will be mini-challenges throughout the Readathon for participants, along with a grand prize giveaway at the end!
  • Sign up at Novel Heartbeat or over at Phantasmic Reads. You may join whenever you like, but to be eligible for our grand prize giveaway, you must sign up by August 24th.
  • To join, all you have to do is make a sign-up post – even if it’s just a “Let’s do this!” thing – and add your post URL to the linky below! You can put your goals and progress (will be required for the final giveaway) in your sign-up post, or you can make it separate. Totally up to you! (You are welcome to use the template we provide as well.)
  • In order to enter for the grand prize, you must have a post to keep track of your progress so we can see that you participated.

Feature & Follow Friday is hosted by Parajunkee of Parajunkee's View and Alison of Alison Can Read.

{Review} The Madman's Daughter - Megan Shepherd

Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.

Accompanied by her father's handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father's madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island's inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father's genius—and madness—in her own blood.

Inspired by H. G. Wells's classic The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Madman's Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we'll do anything to know and the truths we'll go to any lengths to protect.

In a split second the leader's guardian angel, still bathed in that brilliant light, touched a shimmering finger to the gun barrel just before the leader squeezed the trigger and the deafening sound of a gunshot rang out, followed by cries of pain. Someone shrieked in my ear, which I'd later realize was my own scream paired with those of the two other girls.
